Parade.com/phys-ed – Should college students be forced to get fit and do you think physical education should be required in college?

Parade.com/phys-ed wants to know what you think. Should colleges and universities simply offer physical education courses or should they be allowed to force students to take them?

Lincoln University in Pennsylvania recently targeted overweight students and made physical education courses mandatory for graduation requirements. After a campus uprising, the university withdrew the requirement but the question still lingers.

The university was the first to mandate physical education and health classes to students based on weight. The chairman of Lincoln University’s Health, Physical Education, and Recreation department said that the reason these students were specifically targeted, “We didn’t have the resources to require all students to take the class, so we wanted to target those who were identified as at risk for obesity related diseases.”
Most likely the tuition paying people are the ones who will ultimately decide whether college students should be forced to get fit.

Learning to incorporate physical fitness into a grueling college schedule is as important in life as the studies. Many adults are overweight or obese which results in healthcare issues that eventually strains the overall health insurance industry. Individual responsibility taught as a young adult will help to reduce the expense of medical care costs brought on by self inflicted medical issues.

I am 72 years of age and I had the first of two bypass operations when I was 48. After the age of 25 I did not engage in any fitness program of any sort and shopuld have . My father told me long ago thatb the brain is only as good as the body that will carry it — without a fit body the brain is subject to a lack of oxygenwhich does not allow it to function at its peak efficiency it can also at some point lead to sreoke, which means the in effect a partr of the brain dies. I have lived with my wife for 32 years and she never engaged in exercise all through school because see has been obese and was not therefore required to take P.E. classes. She is now, do to the excessive weight she carries, facing joint degener- ation at 50K dollars for each joint. P.E. must be a required course from grade one through the P.H.D. level of school — like it or not. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind.

Physical Education should be made mandatory in kindergarten all the way through high school again just like when President Kennedy made it mandatory. People need to be active their whole life and learn those skills growing up. They will reap the rewards and have the knowledge in their college years and beyond…………..what a gift of life and health to give to people who live in America.
