Heru Nugroho is demanding that Jakarta Governor, Fauzi Bowo, remove the Obama statue saying, “Everybody knows that Obama is a world leader, but he is not our national hero who deserves to be awarded a statue. This has hurt our national pride because there are many Indonesian figures who gave worthy service to this nation but no statue has been built for them.”

Many Indonesians are proud that Obama lived in Jakarta from 1967 to 1971 and attended the local elementary school near where the statue has been installed.

The Obama statue was created at a cost of over $10,000 which was collected from private donations. The Obama statue was the idea of Ron Mullers, a Jakara resident who is also the chairman of a local group called the Friends of Obama Foundation.

Mullers said he was shocked by the controversy and called critics including the ‘Take Down the Barack Obama Statue in Taman Menteng Park’ movement politically motivated.
