The National Hurricane Center predicts that Tropical Storm Erika will bring high winds and heavy rain to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Haiti and Cuba on its projected path toward the U.S. coastline.

Tropical Storm Erika projected path

Erika, or Erica as its more commonly spelled, could be the first hurricane of the 2009 season to make landfall in the U.S., as so far its been a very quiet year for hurricanes.

Of course, all it takes is one big storm to wreak havoc on low-lying areas, so keep an eye on Erika’s storm track as it crosses the Caribbean because the upper-level steering winds are conducive to more strengthening.
