Oil 2.0 – What the heck is Oil 2.0? Simple, it is the excriment of microscopic bacteria that could one day supplement or replace foreign crude oil. Yep, you heard it right, Oil 2.0 is crap.

Oil 2.0 is engineered by LS9

Oil 2.0 is the creation of Silicon Valley company LS9, the re-engineers the DNA make-up of certain types of bacteria. These enhanced bacteria eat agricultural waste and excrete what is essentially crude oil.

The idea behind Oil 2.0 is that crude oil is only a few molecular stages away from the fatty acids normally excreted by yeast or E. coli during fermentation, so it is a short process to take it from poop to oil.

Microorganisms excrete crude oil

LS9 has some heavy hitters on board. President Bob Walsh joined the company after a 26 year career with Shell OIl. Vinod Khosla, the entrepreneur who co-founded Sun Micro-systems is one of the primary investors.

Even better news about Oil 2.0 is that it is carbon negative, and does not require human consumption food like corn or sugar cane to produce. At LS9, the ‘bugs’ can eat wheat straw, wood chips, or whatever the local climate has available.

So, Oil 2.0 is crap. Maybe soon we can tell the Middle East to keep their $140 barrels. We can make our own crap.

And that’s the latest news about LS9 and their Oil 2.0.
