The legless lizard discovered in Brazil’s Cerrado grassland is about eight inches long and apparently evolved that way to help it move quickly across the region’s sandy soil.

The newly discovered lizard is one of 14 new species discovered during a scientific expedition in and around the Serra Geral do Tocantins Ecological Station nestled in the midst of the Cerrado region’s wooded savannah climate.

The Bachia genus to which the legless Brazilian lizard belongs includes other unique species such as geckos from Australia and slow worms that are found only in Europe.
