Since there seems to be room to add one more bust to Mount Rushmore, some are saying that Reagan should be the one to join the existing four.

Reagan on Mount Rushmore

Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln were carved 70 years ago in Rapid City, South Dakota and some think another should be added. Many conservatives believe the fifth should be Ronald Reagan. Congress rejected the idea of an addition 12 years ago, but with the country in it’s current state of disillusionment, maybe now is the time to re-open the issue.

Reagan Mt. Rushmore addition?

Sculptor, Gutzon Borglum started the project at the age of 60 died seven months before the project was completed on October 31, 1941. Mt. Rushmore took fourteen years and $1 million to complete. (Imagine the cost of adding another president now!)

According to the Rapid City, SD tourism website, Borglum died before finishing Washington’s waist and coat or Lincoln’s hands. The beloved monument was built on his desire “to show posterity what manner of men they were. Then breathe a prayer that these records will endure until the wind and the rain alone shall wear them away.”

Should a 70 year old iconic American symbol be tampered with? If so, should it be Ronald Reagan? Would another president be more appropriate like Kennedy or Bush Sr.?

Possibly the most important question is – with the state of the economy, should the US really spend the kind of money it would take to add another president to Mt. Rushmore?
