Raleigh Earthquake – A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit central Virginia on Tuesday and was felt as far south as Raleigh North Carolina.
The USGS reported the epicenter of the earthquake at 34 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia.
Earthquakes in Raleigh, or Virginia for that matter, are very rare especially one of that magnitude to be felt hundreds of miles south and in Washington DC.
The earthquake epicenter was located at 37.875°N, 77.908°W at a depth of 3.7 miles beneath the surface and occurred at 1:54 pm. Some reports that the quake was felt as far north as New York.
Reports of some building damage was reported in Charlottesvlle and Richmond Virgina.
