New Orleans Evacuation - Thousands evacuate the city of New Orleans and other areas of the Gulf Coast as Hurricane Gustav shows signs of reaching a catagory 5 hurricane.

Given the loss of life and property with Hurricane Katrina in 2005, officials are not taking any chances as a category 5 hurricane like Gustav bears down on Cuba.

New Orleans evacuates well in advance because of so many logistics problems like overcrowded highways, airports, and bus terminals.

Securing property and animals is also a major concern with a New Orleans evacuation - many learned that lesson the hard way after Hurricane Katrina.
Now it appears that Gustav is taking a similar path to Katrina as models show that it will stall over the Gulf and deliver over 20 inches of rain - rain that all flows back to the Mississippi river and therefore to New Orleans.
Let’s hope that Gulf Coast residents will take this evacuation seriously and not cause more loss of life by rescuers trying to save those who refused to evacuate.
And that’s the latest news about the New Orleans Evacuation.

Mayor Ray Nagin has ordered mandatory evacuations. “This is the real deal, not a test,” Nagin said. He added that residents that did not heed the warning would be”one of the biggest mistakes of your life.” Nagin made it clear that the city will not offer emergency services to anyone who chooses to stay behind.

OK, here is a tip from a Floridian. When you advising an evacuation turn traffic around on the “in-bound” lanes. In other words the West bound lanes on I-10 and I-12 from Mississippi to N.O. and the South bound lanes of I-55 and I-59 and can be used to drive East or North. Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas have preplanned for this type of opperation. Maybe now that Bobby Jindal is in charge, he’ll figure that out. I certainly would not expect Ray Nagin to.
